State of Oregon requires paid tax preparers to be a CPA, Attorney, LTP or LTC to prepare tax return in the state of Oregon. The IRS is in the process of implementing a nationwide standard and registration process for all the tax preparers unless already an Enroll Agent, CPA or Attorney.
LTP: Licensed Tax Preparer is issued by the Oregon Board of Tax Practitioners. This requires successfully completing the 80-hour tax course and passing an exam on personal taxes and ethics. In the following year, they must maintain a minimum of 30 hours of continuing education each year to renew their license.
LTC: Licensed Tax Consultant is issued by the Oregon Board of Tax Practitioners. This requires having worked as a licensed tax preparer for a minimum of 1100 hours, passing another comprehensive examination, and maintaining a minimum of 30 hours of continuing education each year to renew their license.
EA: Enrolled Agents is a person who has earned the privilege of representing taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service by passing three parts of extensive IRS covering individual, business and ethics. They must maintain 72 hours of CE every 3 years. A minimum of16 of CE must earn per year (2 hour of ethics).
CPA: Certified Public Accountant is license and regulated by each state's board of Accountancy. CPA licenses cover a wide variety of work. Where they may specialize in accounting and taxation.
